Urban Grunge
I have a fascination with “urban grunge.” I often photograph it and it makes me smile. This fascination of mine intrigues me as I have no idea how or why it began. I search for the pattern and composition of seemingly randomly placed words, letters, or objects. The juxtaposition of items that don’t seem to belong together such as this sign centered amongst the graffiti always catches my eye. Seeing such a sight as I wander amongst the streets, camera in hand, always seems to make me smile. I feel like a prospector in search of gold in the stream of life.
We so often feel misplaced amongst the debris of life ourselves, wondering about the randomness that surrounds us. And, we are always searching for patterns, meaning, treasures or beauty amongst the seemingly unrelated events in our lives. And so, this fascination of mine will likely persist til death does me part since it is only then that I will fully know the patterns and reasons for the events in my life. In the meantime, I will continue to seek beauty in the unlikely and treasures amongst the debris.
