Move It!
Ever feel paralyzed? With fear or depression or anger, even boredom? Does the emotion feels like it’s trying to get a choke hold on your life?
Best answer? Move it. Just start doing something. Anything.
I remember a time when I was younger – much younger. I was supposed to go out somewhere with my best friend at the time. But, my friend had a new boy. And, of course new boys overshadow best friends at that age. Nonetheless, I was hurt and angry. I was fuming. I think there may have been smoke coming out of my ears. I felt utterly rejected and replaced. Hit me right in the gut.
I had no idea what to do with myself and just sat on my bed steaming.
Finally, I found bowling alley wax under our kitchen sink. OK, please don’t ask me why we had bowling alley wax under our kitchen sink because I don’t have an answer to that! I only found it.
Anyways, I polished my bedroom floor….for a long time. I was still a little hurt and angry when I was finished, but I did feel better after that.
The same principle still applies…even to depression and boredom. If you are feeling so badly you don’t want to get out of bed or stop playing internet games, the best thing to do is to get up and do something. Anything.
Today, I’m going for a walk. I may even march myself over to the Y and see if they have a financial assistance form I can fill out for a membership. Cuz, let me tell you, I gotta move!
No more sitting on my but. I gotta move it! Even if I don’t feel like it. Join me!

A counselor friend of mine said that if we do something for 1 1/2 minutes, we become invested in continuing. So when I need to get off my "but" and do something, I think to myself that I can do most anything for 1 1/2 minutes. It really does work, at least most of the time!
I read something once that when faced with an unpleasant life circumstance there are 3 steps to take: 1. move 2. narrow your focus 3. take a life-affirming action related to the crisis.
For example – lost job. 1. go for a walk or jog to work off the stress 2. focus on one main issue 3. take at least one action such as update your resume or make an appointment at your local career center.
The worst thing to do is just sit there and freeze in panic. The panic gets worse and nothing gets done and a body at rest tends to stay at rest. So, move it!
My problem is not in starting but in finishing!
