Stop Spinning Your Wheels!

I try so hard to find meaning and direction in my life.  It’s a constant pursuit and a constant struggle.  And I continually spin my wheels.  I’m not the only one.

The blog posting 22 Things I Wish I Had Known Earlier in My Life over at Abubakar Jamil.Com Self Improvement Blog says this:
I have also noticed that the majority among us keep on repeating the same mistakes again and again and in doing so keep on attracting the same kind of circumstances in our lives and then keep complaining too.

The blog posting Resolution or Revolution over at 10 Steps to Finding Your Happy Place (And Staying There) says this:

“It seems to me that most resolutions are promises that we think we should make, without much thought about whether they are promises we really want to make. Also, many of our resolutions are really about habits, either bad habits we want to quit, or good habits we want to develop. Habits can rarely be changed based on a single act of will. Finally, we often set up our resolutions as all or nothing goals. We either meet the goal 100% or we fail. Yikes!”

And then there’s The Happiness Project, a blog dedicated to theories of happiness and testing and applying those theories in an attempt to become more happy.

Sometimes what we think will make us happy leads to unhappiness.  That moment of chocolate bliss which makes us happy in the moment makes us unhappy as the weight piles on and our joints begin to creak.  Or that evening spent watching TV that leads to another evening of the same…  We think we are relaxing and enjoying ourselves and then we look at the pile of unread books, the unfinished projects, the messy house, the unmet goals, and the neglected family and friends.  Are we really happy?

I believe that happiness, long-lasting deep happiness takes planning, and sometimes sacrifice.  Things I’m not necessarily good at.  Hence the spinning of the wheels, the repeating of mistakes, and never leaving the circumstances I so desperately want to leave.

I’m not sure why it’s so hard.  I’m not sure how to stop spinning my wheels and get unstuck.  And add a few other humans into the mix, it becomes even more difficult.  Excuses are often easier than action.

Please, tell me, teach me!  How do YOU get unstuck?  How do YOU stop spinning your wheels?  This inquiring mind really wants to know.

  1. I'm no expert, but I just live the present moment and try to be the person I want to be in the moment. Of course, taking time out for prayer and meditation helps me stay present. And when I inevitably fall short, I start over again.

  2. Stay in the present is good advice. Try to accompish something small each day. Don't be so hard on yourself. Enjoy each day. Hang out with your friends more:) .

  3. Thank you for referencing my blog! Always such a nice compliment.

When I'm spinning my wheels, sometimes I realize that I'm trying to make my situation different than it is. I'm not seeing or accepting my reality as it is. I'm acting or reacting in habitual ways without being aware of my "stuckness." Here is something I wrote about that.

You are in a good place (even if it doesn't feel that way) because you are taking an honest look at where you are. That is always the first step to getting unstuck.
