Moments Such as These
My sister-in-law Christina shared a blog posting on Facebook today. It was really lovely and I found myself immersed in this woman’s story. The posting is entitled “What’s It All For?” and can be found here: http://www.incourage.me/2010/10/whats-it-all-for.html. This post was written by a woman who is so sick that she is completely homebound and, yet, she has written some of the most compelling thoughts on choosing joy that I’ve ever read.
It’s times such as these that I start to remember what it’s all about. It’s not about that job that I don’t have right now. It’s not about the anxiety I have about my finances right now. It’s not about the new coat I want or the new shoes or boots.
It’s not even about becoming famous or writing a book or doing something that the world would consider significant with my life. It’s about each moment of life. It’s about relationships. It’s about gratitude and wonder and experiences. It’s about learning how to see beauty in the mundane.
And it brings me back to why I like photography so much. Capturing that smile, that tender emotion, that moment in time. Bringing back those sweet and special memories with a glance at the framed photo on the wall. It’s about seeing and experiencing. It’s about really looking and noticing and finding beauty all around you.
One of my favorite photography memories involves my point and shoot camera (which sadly died last year), a sunny afternoon, and a Target parking lot. I was frustrated that I did not have and could not afford a DSLR (digital camera with interchangeable lenses) and could not afford the cost of film any more. But I was inspired to use what I had and do what I could to the best of my ability. So, I went to the place where I thought I was least likely to find beauty and set out to find it and capture it with my camera.
The results were fun and unexpected and still get comments. And those pictures continually remind me to be in the moment and to max it out for all its worth and not let lack be a limitation.
